Blogging This Weekend at BarCampAfrica. Yay!

October10

I’m super excited to attend BarCampAfrica, which is scheduled to take place this Saturday, October 11th at the Google campus in Mountain View, California.

BarCampAfrica aims to bring people, institutions and enterprises interested in Africa - as a topic, an opportunity, or a place of action - together in one location to exchange ideas, build connections, re-frame perceptions and catalyze action that leads to positive involvement and mutual benefit between Silicon Valley and the continent of Africa.

One of the things I learned from going to previous web conferences, is that the best way to get the most out of a conference is to prepare beforehand.  So, this time I’m actually reading through BarCampAfrica’s website, learning about the amazing people who will be attending, and thinking about questions I would like to ask.

Some Things I’m Bringing:

I’m planning to bring my Flip video camera, with the hope that I may be able to do some on-the-fly interviews with participants I meet.  There are so many interesting people on the participant roster list for this event, wow!

In addition to my Flip camera, I’ll also be bringing my digital camera and my laptop. I’ve volunteered as a blogger for the event, so these are de-facto necessities.  I look forward to sharing what I learn on Twitter, as well as on this blog.

Why am I going to BarCampAfrica?

Given my interests in technology, social activism, and international development, BarCampAfrica is a natural great fit.  I think I was one of the first to register - but had no idea that it would be a sold-out event, wow!

Africa is a diverse continent, rich in culture and history: I’m interested in learning more about Africa overall, as well as learning about technology projects that are taking place there, and how I may be able to get involved.  I’m also looking forward to meeting others who share my interest in using technology to promote positive social change.

How to Follow BarCampAfrica Events:

One more day to go, yay! : )
